This is where I want to be.

Steven Blush and a hardcore pep talk.
I just got back from a lecture at Parsons, Fashion Land campus with Steven Blush. The author of American Hardcore: A Tribal History gave a talk about fashion….to a prestigious fashion design program…..in New York City….a week before Fashion Week….about hardcore. Yes.
I mean if anyone is qualified to make such an absurd connection, it’s him but I ended up feeling like I sat through a 2 hour hardcore pep talk. He threw in some hair metal talk towards the end but we did thoroughly cover the different styles of jeans and t-shirts sported by kids at hardcore shows in the early 80’s. It also had a motivational spin that went something like “they did it, you can too.” I really fail to see a connection. However, he did a brief slideshow of hair metal bands from the 80’s and the fashionistas in the audience were wearing outfits that resembled about half of their garments. (Also, see Williamsburg.)
I briefly asked him his opinion about the state of hardcore today and he basically said something like “if it moves you, whatever, I guess it’s valid…but I’m not into it.” Fair enough I suppose, but it was said in a way that I could have said something like…I like “I think Brittany Spears is a revolutionary musician and exemplary human being, your thoughts?” and he would have given me the same answer.
